2009 COLORADO GOLF SCHEDULE

Since the International shut down operations in early 2007 after 21 years of bringing the PGA Tour to Colorado, the state has been fortunate to lure several golf events of worldwide stature.

The best of the over-50 set came to the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs for the 2008 U.S. Senior Open, and they will return for another Champions Tour major in May 2010 -- the Senior PGA Championship at Colorado Golf Club in Parker. Meanwhile, some of the game’s top amateurs paid a visit over the summer for the 2008 U.S. Public Links Championship at Murphy Creek in Aurora. And the most prestigious women’s tournament in the world, the U.S. Women’s Open, plans a return engagement at the Broadmoor in 2011.

In 2009, however, there will be a bit of a void on the state schedule, at least by those high standards. For only the second calendar year since 1972, none of the major professional tours (PGA, LPGA or Champions/Seniors) will play a tournament in Colorado.

Nevertheless, there are several intriguing events on the calendar in the coming year.

-- Perhaps the most notable breath of fresh air, tournament-wise, will be the 2009 Palmer Cup, set for June 3-5 at Cherry Hills Country Club. The annual event pits 16 of the best college players from the U.S. and Europe in a Ryder Cup-like competition, with an American course hosting the event in odd-number years.

-- Cherry Hills will also host the first of two years of visits by prestigious Trans-Mississippi Golf Association tournaments. The Trans-Miss Four-Ball will be played Sept. 21-24, 2009 at Cherry Hills, while the Trans-Miss Championship is scheduled for July 12-18, 2010 at Colorado Golf Club.

-- The American Junior Golf Association, a stepping stone for many of the top young players in the world, will hold two tournaments in Colorado in 2009. The AJGA Colorado Junior Open is set for June 2-4 at the Tom Weiskopf-designed Club at Flying Horse in Colorado Springs. The following week, the Junior All-Star at Aspen, for 12-15 year-olds, will be played June 9-11.

As for Colorado tournament mainstays, all of the HealthOne Colorado Open Championships are again set for Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in northeast Denver. The Colorado Open itself is July 23-26, while the Colorado Women’s Open will be May 27-29, and the Colorado Senior Open Sept. 2-4.

The Colorado Golf Association will hold its top amateur championships July 6-10 (Match Play at Bear Creek Golf Club) and Aug. 13-16 (Stroke Play at Lakewood Country Club). On the professional side, the Colorado Section PGA will play its Section Championship Sept. 14-16 at Vista Ridge Golf Club in Erie.

Meanwhile, the Colorado Women’s Golf Association will contest its Match Play June 22-25 at Pinehurst Country Club and its Stroke Play July 14-16 at Valley Country Club in Aurora.

Though most tournament play doesn’t start in earnest until after the Masters, golfers in the area can get a head start on gearing up for the season at the Denver Golf Expo at the Denver Merchandise Mart Feb. 6-8.
