CGA SENIOR STROKE PLAY

At Par-72 Heritage Todd Creek in Thornton

Final Round, August 20, 2008

MURPHY WINS SECOND SENIOR STROKE PLAY -- Steve Murphy of Black Bear Golf Club went wire-to-wire for the second time in the last three years to win the CGA Senior Stroke Play title. As in 2006, Murphy struggled to fend off runner-up Richard Gorbell of Springs Ranch Golf Course. Murphy, who began the day with a five-stroke lead, shot 77 Wednesday for a 3-under 213 total, one shot better than Gorbell and Greg Goode of Murphy Creek. “This time I played better” than in 2006, Murphy said. “But taking a two-stroke penalty on 10 was really frustrating. I'm just glad I held it together." Murphy was sitting even par for the day in the 10th fairway when Gorbell's second shot from the native struck Murphy’s ball, moving it a few inches. Murphy failed to replace his ball before playing and consequently incurred a two-stroke penalty. Gorbell trailed by two going into the 17th hole, where Murphy’s tee shot nearly found the water hazard. Murphy took a stance with one leg knee-deep in the water and was able to play the ball to the center of the green, saving bogey. Gorbell made par and cut Murphy’s lead to one going into the final hole. On the par-5 18th, Gorbell narrowly missed his birdie attempt and Murphy sank a 5-foot par putt for the victory. Gorbell finished in a second-place tie for the third straight year in this event.

Sady wins 1-up  in CGA Senior Match Play final

Friday, May 16, 2008

CASTLE ROCK — Ken Sady of Eagle Ranch Golf Club in Eagle, who twice finished runner-up in the Colorado Golf Association Match Play, earned his first state title Friday with a 1-up victory over David Delich of the Broadmoor in the finals of the CGA Senior Match Play at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course.

Sady won the last two holes to prevail.

Earlier in the day, Sady defeated Ted Warner of Greeley Country Club 4 and 2 in the semifinals. Delich edged Richard Gorbell of Springs Ranch GC 1 up to make his second consecutive final match appearance.

In the Super Senior (over 60) Division, 1998 Senior Match Play champion Roger Gunderson of Green Valley Ranch GC defeated Jim Collins of the Country Club at Castle Pines 2 up in the final match. In his career, Gunderson has now won the CGA Senior Match Play and CGA Senior Stroke Play titles in both the Championship Divisions and the Super Senior Divisions.
